Here comes your non-violent resistance
Israel:
Unrest on the borders
ON SUNDAY Israel got an unexpected and unpalatable taste of its nightmare scenario: masses of Palestinians marching, unarmed, towards the borders of the Jewish state, demanding the redress of their decades-old national grievance.
In three separate episodes during the day—on the Syrian border with the Golan Heights, on the Lebanese border and on the border with the Gaza Strip—those marching were met with live gun fire. At least a dozen Palestinians died. Scores more, most of them young men, were injured.
We seem to lack a sense of humor when, say, the Libyans, Tunisians or Egyptians do this. And it seems that perhaps our long national sense of humor with the Israelis may finally be wearing thin.
Obama says Palestine must be based in 1967 borders
A pragmatic attitude toward the Israelis suggests that they were useful Cold War allies who have outlasted their usefulness. I don't wish any harm on them, but I don't see a continued point in giving them guns, either, particularly if they're going to mow down the unarmed with them. Obviously other political considerations reign. Equally obviously, it's going to get harder and harder for them to reign if the Palestinians have indeed Figured This Out.
